On August 11th, Monique K. started a new role at World Wide Technology’s North American Integration Center in Illinois. Just weeks in, she is already thriving, showing what determination, support, and inclusive hiring can achieve.
Monique is profoundly Deaf and communicates primarily through American Sign Language (ASL). She first connected with BCI through Illinois Vocational Rehabilitation. After an initial placement at Target, she worked closely with BCI Competitive Employment Advisor Bob Lister to find a better fit.
Encouraged by her team, Monique pursued an opening at WWT. The opportunity quickly changed the trajectory of her career. “I needed a job that supported my Deafness,” she said. “Target had many things I couldn’t understand. WWT has been eye-opening.”
A New World at World Wide Technology
WWT ensured Monique’s first days set her up for success. Bob coordinated ASL interpreting services for onboarding and training. WWT staff received awareness training and learned communication strategies. Forklift drivers learned hand signals. Teammates practiced basic ASL. Managers set clear expectations. “The supports from WWT are off the charts,” Bob said.
Monique begins her day at 6 a.m. in the packing department. She prepares shipments for UPS, FedEx, DHL, and international carriers. She checks in with her team, joins daily huddles, and shares notes with coworkers. Her upbeat attitude and willingness to teach simple communication strategies have quickly made her a valued team member.
“Bob has been amazing with his support,” Monique said. “He ensures I understand expectations and helps my team support me too. I could not ask for better.”
What’s Next
Looking ahead, Monique hopes to follow in the footsteps of her trainer, Tina, and become a Specialist. For now, she is focused on learning, growing, and proving that barriers can be broken and goals achieved.
Monique’s story is more than personal success. It highlights the value of inclusive hiring and the power of partnerships like BCI and WWT. With the right support, determination, and teamwork, people of all abilities can thrive in meaningful careers.
